Bullying has long been a concern for Fremont schools, spokesperson Gary Leatherman said.A 2001 survey found that name-calling and bullying was widespread among the schools, including teasing based on things such as ethnicity, religion, gender identity, and body shape.
"One of the reasons Fremont is engaged in this is we're such a diverse community, and we're sensitive to these issues because we have a large number of people from the Middle East, Afghanistan, and India - or people, who through physical appearance or dress, may be identified with groups being held responsible for terrorism," Leatherman said.
The school district recently completed a new survey of virtually every student in 7th through 12th grade.Still being tabulated, the results will be announced sometime in the coming weeks, Leatherman said.
