  Gina Levay was born in Chicago and holds an MFA in Photo and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts. Inspired by the diversity and energy of people, LeVay works both in the U.S. and abroad for editorial, advertising and music clients while pursuing independent projects. Her award-winning work, The Sandhog Project, was exhibited as a large-scale photo and video installation at New York's Grand Central Terminal in 2006 and will be published by powerHouse Books in Fall 2009.

  On Friday, May 15, the New York Photo Festival will host a panel discussion featuring Redux photographers Gina LeVay, Mark Peterson, Nathaniel Welch; photography directors Bill Black (Reader's Digest), Bruce Perez (Redbook), Allyson Torrisi (Popular Mechanics); and moderated by Janene Outlaw (The New York Times) discussing their experiences sharing stories in photographic format, as well as providing perspective on how America's youth will define a not-too-distant future.

  Gina LeVay was born in Chicago and holds an MFA in Photography and Related Media from the School of Visual Arts. LeVay works both in the U.S. and abroad, on editorial, commercial and independent projects. Her award-winning work "The Sandhog Project," was exhibited as a large-scale photo and video installation at New York's Grand Central Terminal and now a forthcoming book with Powerhouse, Fall 2009. LeVay has been a grant recipient of The Andrew Rhodes Fund for Young Artists at The Visual Arts Foundation, as well as one of PDN's 30 photographers to watch. Gina is an alumnus and current staff member of The Eddie Adams Workshop, as well as a visiting faculty member of the LLA Academy in India. She is currently based in New York City.

  "The content and scale of the installation provides a rare portal to unseen characters and systems of underground New York . . . daily life of Gotham from a different perspective," said LeVay, who conceived the sandhog project and over two years photographed the sandhogs at work and in studio settings.
  
  She also gave cameras to sandhogs for tunnel imagery, she said.
  
  The multimedia exhibit includes a video of rushing through the tunnel and audio of the "sound and voices of the miners."
  
  LeVay, a Chicago-born a graduate of New York's School of Visual Arts, has had her work published and exhibited in New York and Europe, most recently in Spain's 2005 Photo Espana festival.She also is an alumna and current staff member of the Eddie Adams Workshop, which trains young photojournalists.
