"The worst injuries are the ones when you have kids involved," said Barbara Latenser, medical director of the University Hospitals' Burn Treatment Center.

"Kids trust adults to keep them safe. They don't know the dangers."

Latenser said injuries are expected each year on Independence Day.The causes vary but frequently include a combination of inattentiveness or the mix of alcohol and illegal drug use.

"It's a wide range of people that we see," she said.
    ...
After years of seeing burn victims, Latenser said she shudders to think of how carelessly she handled fireworks in her youth.

"It seemed like good fun at the time, but now I think, I can't believe we used to do that stuff," she said.

For Latenser and the other doctors and nurses who work in the burn center - the only such unit in Iowa - foresight has come to define their work.
