In the book's second half Lane moves on to practical concerns, among them the role of the pastor.He presents the three-faceted approach indicated by his title, with specific ideas related to each.For instance, he discusses various ways to "ask" (to invite congregants to pledge support) and provides information about advantages, drawbacks, and relative effectiveness.Lane encourages congregations to foster a culture of thanksgiving and urges stewardship teams to say thank you early and often.

Lane is director of ELCA's Stewardship Key Leaders program.His book would be an excellent resource for pastors and lay leaders.

In September, 1982, Mr. Charles V. Lane resigned as trustee of Immaculate Conception Church after serving 18 years.According to Canon Law, each parish may appoint two lay trustees to act as advisors to the pastor.During his term of service, Mr. Lane helped to review the plans and designs for building the new church in the late 1960's.He also served as financial advisor to the pastor.In this capacity, he was instrumental in negotiating the purchase of the Syracuse-Chenango right-of-way through the church property.Charles Lane's service to his parish started long before he was appointed as trustee; he had been an usher for 42 years.

On Sunday, October 10, 1982 an updated volunteer sheet was distributed to the parishioners listing programs covering all phases of activities of parish life.

Charles Lane, who directs the stewardship department for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, wrote an article in one of the journals I read.Listen to what he said:

The cold winds of January were blowing.In the warmth of the church basement, Pastor Johnson eagerly reported to his colleagues, "Stewardship was very good at First Church last year.We not only paid all the bills, we even had a little extra money that we have carried over into the new year."

Unwittingly, writes Lane, Pastor Johnson had just become an accomplice in one of the most dastardly kidnappings ever known to Christendom.
