Late Wednesday night, we became aware that "rumors" were circulating through student-to-student e-mails and text messages that one of our students was planning to bring a gun to South High School on either Thursday or Friday. (None was found.) Upon receiving that information, South High School Principal Dr. Stephen Lando contacted me and we jointly contacted the Nassau County Police.

As Superintendent of Schools, I continually struggle with how to communicate in a timely, but accurate, manner with parents about such complex issues, especially when the police are involved in their thorough, but time consuming, investigations. (Dr. Lando has composed a more detailed letter which was distributed to all students and mailed to all South parents on Friday.That letter is attached to this message on our website.)
