It's because of politicians such as John "Mack" Lake that New Jersey has its reputation as a den of corruption.People, in New Jersey and outside New Jersey think you can't trust government here because it's dirty. With Lake, it was.

The reputation harms New Jersey in countless immeasurable ways, and it's why Lake should face a stiff prison term when a judge sentences him in March.

Lake, 51, the former Republican mayor of Carneys Point, was caught last fall trying to bribe a political opponent to end his campaign for Lake's seat on the township committee.Democrat Anthony Rullo, who went on to beat Lake in the race, said Lake offered him jobs with the township if he would drop out of the race.Rullo eventually contacted authorities and wore a wire to record Lake's bribes.

Lake was found guilty Friday of two counts of bribery and one count of official misconduct -- crimes that carry the presumption of a five- to 10-year prison sentence and up to $150,000 in fines.

Judge William Forester shouldn't let Lake off lightly.
