Police Commissioner John Laffey, who at the time was deputy commissioner but was scheduled to take the top job on Dec. 18, said he simply wanted to bring in his own top people."It was not a demotion, only a reassignment," said Laffey, a former deputy chief with the New York police department.
The lieutenant's son vehemently disagreed."How can they say it is not a demotion when they took his title, rank and pay," he said."He was a detective-lieutenant and the detective commander, and he was earning about $5,000 more than he's getting now.That's more than reassignment in anybody's book."
