Edward S. Labowitz is a partner in Coudert Brothers' Los Angeles office and a member of the firm's Entertainment Practice Group.Mr. Labowitz's clients have included entertainment companies from the United States and over 25 other countries.He has advised clients in such areas as co-production, studio and independent film and television development, production, and financing; film library acquisitions; television network and syndication agreements, domestic and foreign distribution arrangements, copyright matters; infomercials; direct marketing; and the creation of new free and cable television networks.Mr. Labowitz's practice includes representation of domestic and international telecasters, film and television producers and distributors; writers, directors and actors.Mr. Labowitz also counsels clients with regard to licensing of intellectual property to book and software developers and publishers, and to toy manufacturers.
Mr. Labowitz has written extensively for and been quoted in numerous entertainment industry publications, and he has been a regular speaker at bar association, college and continuing education courses, and industry functions around the country.
Mr. Labowitz began his legal career as a litigator in Los Angeles.He left private practice, serving as Vice President of Business Affairs for Filmways/Orion Television for five years and PolyGram Pictures for two years, and then as Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs of ABC Motion Pictures for three years, until returning to private law practice.
Mr. Labowitz received his J.D. in 1973 from Boalt Hall School of Law of the University of California, Berkeley, and his A.B. in 1970 from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs of Princeton University.He is a member of the Los Angeles Copyright Society, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and the Hollywood Radio and Television Society.From 1994-1996, Mr. Labowitz served as Co-Chair of Princeton University's West Coast Celebration of its 250th Anniversary; from 1996-1999, Mr. Labowitz was President of the Princeton Club of Southern California and was a member of the National Executive Committee of the Alumni Council of Princeton University.Mr. Labowitz speaks English and Spanish.
