Come 11.30am.....oh ... where is the guest of owner ... ? Luckily nobody panics....a few minutes later the Hon. Raphael Tuju arrives accompanied by DG Abdulhamid Aboo, President Eric Krystall, PDG Governor Yusuf Kodwavwala among others.
    ...
Present during this auspicious event according to our guest book included the following...DG Abdulhamid Aboo, President Eric Krystall, PDG Yusuf Kodwavwala, Rtn.
    ...
Our very own President Eric Krystall came in next and he gave recognition to past Presidents who have steered the club to what it is now.

President Eric gave way to District Governor Abdulhamid Aboo who thanked the club for inviting him to the occasion. He also came with some good news to the club and this was a message and framed certificate to the Rotary Club of Nairobi from the Rotary International President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar. In his message, the RI President congratulated the club and reminded us that "it is through hands on service and active participation by each Rotarian in each club that our work continues to be meaningful and successful." He also said that this was a special time to celebrate since Rotary was also beginning its second century of 'Service Above Self' and urged us to commit to our motto.

The DG then introduced our Chief Guest Hon. Raphael Tuju the Minister for Information and Communication who promised to be brief and did just that. He talked of his cooperation with Rotary in development activities in his constituency. He mentioned the recent mobile health clinic in his constituency of Rarieda that was coordinated by Rotarians.
    ...
DG Abdulhamid Aboo and Memuna, Salim Fazal, Yusuf and Marie Dawood, Eric Krystall and Nani Croze, Sally and Isaac Gitoho, Dr. Manu Chandaria, Barbara Magoha, John and Freidel Liebe-Savage, David Githanga, Barbara Steenstrup, Romy Madan, Willi Strothman, Jerry Owuor, Marcel Werner, Sylvia Mwichuli, Anna Ramamonjiarisoa, Francis Njiri, Kauli Mwembe, Arun Devani, Suli Shah, Dudley Stannah, Ender Jurgen, Elizabeth Maloba, John Simba, Arthur and Florence Mattli, Sudesh Walia, Jonathan Campaigne, Mohamed Rahemtulla, Rhoda Orengo and myself.
    ...
Fellow Rotarians, just like our founder Paul Harris had an idea 100 years ago that grew into Rotary....yesterday's success can be credited to the idea of our very own President Eric Krystall who decided that we celebrate our birthday uniquely by having a simple ceremony (The Stanley) and the Soup Kitchen (Mbagathi Road Primary School & feeding sessions at Jalaram Temple).
    ...
Thank you President Eric! Many thanks to Rtn.

Our President, Eric Krystall's jacket just got heavier! Here's why.He has added another medal to it by being appointed the Country Representative for ANCHOR in Kenya.ANCHOR stand for Africa Network for Children Orphaned and at Risk.ANCHOR is a multi-country AIDS project that is spearheaded by Rotarians For Fighting AIDS (RFFA) which President Eric is a member.Fellow Rotarians, lets support President Eric by joining RFFA and kindly contact him Eric for more details.Thank you Eric for "Leading the Way" in tackling the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Another Rotarian "Leading the Way" is PDG Mohamed Abdulla. He was instrumental in the decision not to split the Governors Council of Southern and Eastern Africa. The council is an association of Governors in our region and those down south. Its main aim is to provide a forum for sharing experiences. He advocated for Rotary to act locally and think globally and for the 16 districts in Africa to collaboratively work together for Rotary to achieve its objectives.Thank you PDG Mohamed, you are surely "Leading the Way" not only here at home but out there!

For those of us who remained in the Green City in the Sun we have one of our shortest meetings as we finish at 1.45pm! And things add up well as our slated guest speaker the then IMF Senior Resident Representative is recalled to Washington and cancels his presentation saving us some embarrassment since attendance was very low. Luckily, PP Michael Klass comes to our rescue as he takes the opportunity to tell us about his work in HIV/AIDS. At the consequent meeting the Chairman of the Kenya National Commission of Human Rights Mr. Maina Kiai gives another invigorating presentation on his organization and its activities.

Outgoing President Eric Krystall Outgoing President Eric Krystall

Another Rotary year has gone by.But it wasn't an ordinary year. Not only was this the 100th anniversary year of Rotary International, but it was the 75th one in which our club gave service to the community here in Nairobi and indeed beyond.

Twelve months ago we elected Eric Krystall to be our leader. Now it's no secret that Eric was alive and kicking when the Rotary Club of Nairobi was founded. And these days it's fashionable (except in certain political circles!) to promote youth as the overriding quality required in a 21st century leader. But when we chose Eric we knew what we were doing. We invited him to take on the heavy responsibility because we saw him as a competent, humble, caring man, the living incarnation of the 4-Way Test.Eric has spent his life as a social entrepreneur, and his year at our helm has given him the opportunity to work with a hundred kindred spirits.

He is the opposite of a dictator. Not for him the much loved Kenyan model of the leader as ,Big Man'.No, he is a facilitator, who requires no credit or glory, who takes no joy in wielding power for power's sake.
    ...
We certainly did so under Eric, and we'll definitely do so under Diamond.

    So asante Eric; karibu Diamond.
