SCHERERVILLE | David Krupa truly understands the needs of people who have lost a limb.
Krupa, 24, of Forest Park, Ill., lost his left leg when he was 1 1/2 years old. With the help of Shriners Hospital and encouragement from his parents, he eventually was able to get a prosthetic and participate in sports and other activities during school.
His experience spurred him into the field as a career, and he is now a board eligible prosthetist with Scheck & Siress, an orthotics and prosthetics business with offices in Schererville and throughout the Chicago area.
Not only does Krupa wear such a device and train others on proper use and care, he makes them -- from shaping the piece to fit the residual limb, to making plaster molds and custom-making the prosthetic limb.
Krupa plans to travel to Third World countries and bring prosthetics to dozens of people who would never be able to afford them otherwise.
Krupa is going with a group of several specialists to Quito, Ecuador Jan. 28 to provide free prosthetics and assistance.
...
Krupa also has begun working with the Merrillville-based Hearts in Motion, which regularly travels to Third World countries bringing doctors, construction workers and volunteers to perform surgeries, build homes and train emergency workers.
Karen Scheeringa, executive director of Hearts in Motion, said the group met Krupa when it got a foot from Scheck & Siress for a person who needed it.
...
"We really want him (Krupa) to be a part of that."
Earlier this year, Krupa visited Haiti with many of the same goals.
"That was my first experience doing international work," he said.

David Krupa is asking that anyone who has old prosthetic parts that they are no longer using to please donate them for use in Ecuador. Anyone who wants to donate may call Krupa at Scheck & Siress at (219) 864-9501. -
