This is the first award of its kind for Krupa, who is married to Charlie Krupa, who has been named the new superintendent of Necedah Area Schools. She attended Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing "when there still was (one)" and received her degree from Viterbo and her master's from University of Wisconsin in child adolescent nursing.
Her involvement with the WASN includes serving as treasurer from 1996 to 2000, during which time she applied for and received tax exemption status for the organization, serving as president from 2000-2002 when the president-elect was unable to do so, and serving as the legislative liaison.
As liaison, Krupa monitors legislation that affects school nursing. She has testified occasionally, like before a committee on psychotropic drugs or against AB 725, which would remove the DPI's authority to license school nurses.
Being the school nurse means that "every day's different," Krupa said. Some of her duties include contacting students and parents about health issues; show staff what to do or look for in emergencies; and teaching the occasional class on puberty, reproductive and HIV issues; anatomy and physiology at the high school, or other classes as needed - like when a younger student's classmates need to understand his or her health issue, and learn that it's not contagious.

In addition to her duties with the district, Krupa also helps with the Ho-Chunk Youth Fitness Program, works with the Lions to arrange pre school vision screening, and helps teens as a smoking cessation facilitator.
Although she does a variety of different tasks as school nurse, one part has always been her favorite.
"Sometimes you have to help (the kids) do things that are scary or that they don't want to do ... and make them feel they can do it," she said, adding that when that happens, the kids are really proud of themselves for accomplishing it.
One thing she's learned from working with children is that, when you have to do something, you don't give the students a lot of time beforehand.
"You explain it well, tell them you're going to do it, and you do it," she said.
Krupa's years here -- and at Jefferson before that -- have provided her with a lot of stories and memories. For example, one little boy had a sore foot but wouldn't let her look at it. Finally, he crawled under the table to take off his shoe. When she saw his pink sock, she figured out that he was probably embarrassed by that.
Although she knows a lot about child nursing, it's hard for Krupa to compare it to working with adults as she hasn't done so aside from a year and a half near the beginning of her career.
"I try to tell the staff I don't know much about anyone over 18," she joked.
Krupa said one of the main health issues for her and other school nurses are immunizations.
"I'm a strong advocate for immunization and spend a lot of time helping people figure out what they need and where they can get it," she said, adding that she does respect parents' right to waive. -

Necedah Area High School Principal Charlie Krupa said he bought a unit to deter teens from drinking on senior class trips.
Some thought it was cool ; others said , ' Oh , they don' t trust us , this isn' t legal , ' Krupa said.
Do we use it now. No , I got it in the closet. But it' s a deterrent , just like having a camera up in Wal-Mart or a police car at a stop sign. We haven' t had a need to use it..
