Nancy Krulikowski of Naugatuck, a staff nurse at Saint Mary's Hospital for 25 years who now works in the critical care/telemetry unit, received a special award for researching the use of therapeutic humor in her graduate studies program at Western Connecticut State University.

Her thesis, a study called "The Lived Experience of Critical Care Nurses' Use of Humor," was presented to the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor International Conference 2005.

She also uses humor to relieve some patients' stress.

"There's so much they have to deal with," Krulikowski said, of patients.

By referring to the wires of an IV as a pile of spaghetti or tangled yarn, medical devices become less scary and something patients can identify with, she said.
