Pilkington Australia's President, Laurie Kruger said, "Pilkington has been invited to sign the EPA covenant because of the societal value the energy and water saving products will create when the Dandenong plant is upgraded next year to manufacture high-tech coated glass products.
"The $130 million upgrade incorporates a state-of-the-art five beam chemical vapour deposition (CVD) coater that will allow for production of new, environmentally efficient glass products including energy saving glass for buildings, self-cleaning glass and glass that will be used in solar energy production.
"The plant upgrade, which is the biggest for Pilkington anywhere in the world, represents the next evolution of manufacturing in this state, transforming Pilkington in Victoria from a manufacturer of largely commodity products to a source of innovative value-added products through best practice applications that underpin the future of the Victorian glass industry," Laurie Kruger said.
He said, "High quality energy-efficient glass that will be produced at the plant can play a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. For example, the use of low e coated glass in Victorian homes will significantly reduce household electricity and gas consumption each and every year, and thereby reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 35 percent while saving consumers money.
The Sustainability Covenant is a voluntary agreement between EPA Victoria, Sustainability Victoria, the Australian Industry Group and Pilkington to work together to protect the environment and to contribute to a more sustainable Victoria and Australia.
Mr Kruger added, "Each partner will play a valuable role in spreading knowledge among key decision-makers about our energy-efficient glass products.Although a Victorian initiative the AIG will promote awareness of glass nationally in conjunction with the Pilkington sales team, our customers and industry partners.
"Today's signing clearly shows that Pilkington has the skill set and dedication to manufacture glass products that embrace both economic and environmental sustainability. Our next challenge is to encourage the rest of Australia to realise how they can make a difference to energy and natural resource use when building or renovating with glass.
"Today's signing also means that Pilkington employees can be both proud to be associated with the production of quality products and the fact that they are contributing to improving our world," Mr Kruger said.
