A tribute to my coachTuesday, May 27, 2003 1:20:06 PM - [Cached Version]

My "Coach" is Bob Krug, who after 26 years at the helm, has retired as coach of the Garden City High School boys and girls tennis teams. And after teaching science at GCHS for 34 years, he's leaving that job too for a teaching job at Holcomb High School.

His departure is a sad one for me.He helped teach me tennis, was my high school coach, gave me my first summer job and has been on the other side of my reporter questions in recent years.

Through it all, he's always been "Coach."

He grew up in Garden City, made his name as a tennis star at GCHS and Garden City Community College, then earned his degree and came home to devote his life to teaching and coaching in the town where he grew up.

And due to his longevity - few stay in the same job and place as long as Krug has - and his giving nature, few have touched as many young lives in Garden City through the years.

Whether showing a 6-year-old how to hold a racket in his summer lessons or coaching GCHS players on the finer points of the game, he always has been a dedicated ambassador of the game.

And whether it's lecturing in biology or putting together an experiment in chemistry, he's always been a devoted teacher.

The rewards for him have been the kids and families he has associated with.

Coach has been a part of my life in some way for the better part of the last 18 years - as a tennis instructor, then coach, then boss when I helped him teach lessons and eventually as a source for me when I was the local tennis beat writer. He's known my wife even longer - Dawn was "just a baby" when she started taking lessons.
    ...
"We'll find a replacement, but there won't be another Bob Krug," GCHS Athletics Director Bill Weatherly said about Krug's retirement.

That's the reason Garden City High School girls tennis coach Bob Krug always looks forward to sending his players to the state tournament. Then when Darcy Wells' story is thrown into the mix , Krug gets even more anxious for the start of the tournament , set to begin Friday at Wichita's Riverside Tennis Center.

Last year , Wells rolled to a surprisingly easy 6-2 , 6-0 first-round win over Wichita Heights' Shuree Pruitt before falling in her next three matches.

The thing Garden City kids have that we take to state that I'm not sure if those eastern kids have , is that we're hungry , Krug said. Those girls sometimes have the tendency to overlook you.Our girls will fight everyone to the finish. They know they are going up against racket-club players and girls who play year-round with private coaching.None of our girls have that..

    ...
But Krug said he knew his girls realized state was a different stage.

I expect the girls to compete , play hard and surprise the sports writers , Krug said with a laugh. Will we win or lose. That's not really important to me..If we play hard , have the right attitude and represent our community and school well , that's all we can ask..

"It was a good tournament for them," said GCHS coach Bob Krug."They're getting better with each tournament. There's still a ways to go, but I think we'll see more at Hays and on Saturday."

The Buffaloes didn't go to Topeka Monday, and instead will play Thursday at Hays.Krug usually intentionally schedules more tournaments that the maximum allowed eight, mostly for weather purposes. But by scheduling that many, he can also choose this late in the season if he wants to go to one and not another.

We can handle 32 at our complex , so sometimes we put as many as six girls on one court , said Garden City coach Bob Krug.

Krug will use the Garden City Community College courts for today in addition to Grimsley-Harmon.

Few days in the preseason are as important as today for the tennis team , which returns five of its seven letter winners from last season.Today is the seedings tournament , where every girl gets her chance to play for a varsity spot.

So far , 34 girls are expected to participate in today's matches , although Krug said there could be as many as 38.

Sixteen girls will play in the Brown bracket and the rest in the White bracket to determine each girls' seeding. The top two players in the White bracket can challenge any girl in the Brown bracket.

A couple of girls may surprise us , maybe some upperclassmen , but that's why we have this challenge , Krug said.

Considering many tennis teams had already played in tournaments this fall, Garden City High School girls tennis coach Bob Krug wasn't disappointed with his team winning 14-of-20 matches and finishing second at the Great Bend Invitational, which wrapped up Monday when Saturday's play was suspended by poor weather.
