My "Coach" is Bob Krug, who after 26 years at the helm, has retired as coach of the Garden City High School boys and girls tennis teams. And after teaching science at GCHS for 34 years, he's leaving that job too for a teaching job at Holcomb High School.
His departure is a sad one for me.He helped teach me tennis, was my high school coach, gave me my first summer job and has been on the other side of my reporter questions in recent years.
Through it all, he's always been "Coach."
He grew up in Garden City, made his name as a tennis star at GCHS and Garden City Community College, then earned his degree and came home to devote his life to teaching and coaching in the town where he grew up.
And due to his longevity - few stay in the same job and place as long as Krug has - and his giving nature, few have touched as many young lives in Garden City through the years.
Whether showing a 6-year-old how to hold a racket in his summer lessons or coaching GCHS players on the finer points of the game, he always has been a dedicated ambassador of the game.
And whether it's lecturing in biology or putting together an experiment in chemistry, he's always been a devoted teacher.
The rewards for him have been the kids and families he has associated with.
Coach has been a part of my life in some way for the better part of the last 18 years - as a tennis instructor, then coach, then boss when I helped him teach lessons and eventually as a source for me when I was the local tennis beat writer. He's known my wife even longer - Dawn was "just a baby" when she started taking lessons.

"We'll find a replacement, but there won't be another Bob Krug," GCHS Athletics Director Bill Weatherly said about Krug's retirement.
