Brian Kruetner - an assistant manager for Pioneer Hi-Bred International - says that workers like Barkema are crucial for corn production.
They pull tassels of the stalks on every four rows, leaving the next row tasseled for the purpose of pollination.
The part that's tasseled sheds a fine yellow pollen to the detasseled rows.
The cross-pollination results in a stronger offspring of seed with more yield potential.

Kruetner says the company wouldn't be able to produce seed without the efforts of the young detasslers.
Detasslers generally are 14 to 18 years old and work seven days a week.
