Jeff Krueger, Registered Dietitian and professional certified guide, founded Healthybeing to empower all people to feel great, feel happy, feel less stress by providing accurate advice on nutrition and health.

"The marketplace is just saturated with competing ideas on how to get healthy, stay healthy-- here at healthybeing we are looking to simplify the confusion and show people the easy steps they can take to start on their journey to increased energy, looking better, feeling better, being happier and more in control. This is where you learn to not sweat the small stuff and keep things in perspective."

Jeff has a variety of nutrition experience in both hemispheres and on three continents. After roaming the wilds of British Columbia and the Yukon as a tree-planter and commercial fisherman, Jeff entered and completed a B.Sc. in Nutrition at the University of British Columbia. He then finished his Dietetic Internship in Ottawa, based out of the Ottawa Civic Hospital.

"Being in the nation's capital was an ideal learning experience. It was the ,beginning' of transforming university academia into practical reality. Not only did I learn the clinical and out patient applications in my rotations through programs like the Heart Institute and the diabetes program, I received a first-hand look at the wealth of community and federal initiatives I was introduced to both in Ottawa and through my electives in other parts of the country.I think it's unusual to have those opportunities to be invited into the world of federal policy, positions and decisions around food and nutrition."

Jeff is an accredited member in good standing of both the College of Dietitians of British Columbia and the Dietitians of Canada. These are recognized affiliates of the American Dietetic Association.

He started his professional career in the hospitals of Castlegar, Nelson, Kaslo, and New Denver, located in the West Kootenay area of British Columbia.
    ...
Jeff left public health in 2002 to consult in his private practice part-time and continue guiding sea kayak, biking, mountaineering, and hiking trips for a variety of adventure companies all over the world."It was the only way I could finish building my own house, fix my '75 dodge van, publish my whitewater guidebook, and still play.My parents and sisters insist on taking trips with me just so they can enjoy my cooking."

Jeff has invited Janice Polloway onto the healthybeing team.

Through consultation with Registered Dietician Jeff Krueger, Mountain Trek has developed a food and fitness program that supports the notion of long-term sustainable weight loss through the "food = energy = activity = weight loss" relationship, rather than dieting and food deprivation.

This relationship of food and activity has resulted in documented average weight loss of 14-17% of a person's body weight over one year for many individuals, and more for some people.

Not only does weight loss occur, but also significant health benefits such as reducing cholesterol, lowering blood pressure, preventing carcinogens from forming, reducing heart and digestive problems, reducing headaches, increase energy levels, and many others.

Generally, Jeff has found in his research and practice the things that seem to PREVENT weight loss and good health are:· Inadequate breakfast· Inadequate water· Inadequate activity after the last meal of the day· Inadequate amount of fiber foods daily, and too many starchy foods (bread)· Inadequate daily vegetable intake

This month features Jeff Krueger, our FitPlan Weight Loss program Nutritionist.

The first thing you notice about Jeff Krueger is that he isn't your typical stereotyped "Dietitian"!The picture above left is Jeff in the midst of pursuing one of his hobbies - extreme whitewater kayaking. To the right is Jeff on a glacier, after another sport he loves - ice climbing.

Jeff is certainly an outdoor adventurer, but he makes his living pursuing another great interest - disease prevention nutrition. He is a Registered Dietitian, with a B.Sc. from the University of British Columbia (1990), and a Dietetic Internship at Ottawa Civic Hospital. He has worked as a RD at Castlegar Hospital since 1992, and with Mountain Trek as a consultant since 2001.

Jeff likes to write, and he is the author of "Disease Prevention Diet", published in various nutrition and lifestyle articles appearing in newspapers and magazines around B.C.Happily, this very disease prevention diet is first and foremast effective in weight loss programs, and this has resulted in a beneficial relationship between Jeff and Mountain Trek's guests.

Jeff has published an exciting book (visually, the pictures are amazing), called "West Kootenay Whitewater - a guide for kayakers and canoeists" (2001).He has also worked as a guide and researcher for a major adventure company, and is fully qualified in Advanced Wilderness First Aid.

Above and beyond all that, Jeff is a personable and motivating individual. His approach to diets and weight loss is sensible and moderate, fully recognizing the pitfalls and temptations of our everyday lives in trying to keep to a regime. At Mountain Trek, his philosophy dovetails with our own, and he is an endless source of credible information on nutrition.

This season, Jeff will be participating in some of our programs not only as expert but also as guide, in order to make his talents more readily available to Mountain Trek guests during their stay with us.A win-win situation for all of us!

    CLOTHING for your ACTIVE VACATION

Some tips from the folks who are out in the mountains every day.

An important piece in a hiker's wardrobe is a vest, invaluable for it's flexibility of use and light weight. In the late spring or late summer, it can be layered over a base layer (t-shirt) for warmth, comfort, and protection at the beginning of a hike in the crisp alpine; in cooler seasons it can be layered under a rainproof jacket to keep the core of the body warm as an intermediate insulation layer during the winter.

Guilt-free gourmet While the suggested caloric intake is 1,200 a day, the big picture is metabolism, says spa dietitian Jeff Krueger, R.D.Rather than depriving guests, we advocate the food = energy = activity weight-loss formula. The priorities are losing fat weight and maintaining or building up muscle mass.To fuel your daily hikes, Krueger serves hearty, yet low-cal fare like Northwest pancakes, spinach-pepper frittatas, poached herbed halibut, Thai chicken and peach-vanilla smoothies.
