John Krska, General Manager of Casa Cassara
    ...
Brian Freeborn, Casa Cassara winemaker presided over an amazing Winemaker's dinner at the Wine Cottage Bistro at 285 South Broadway in Old Orcutt (about three miles West from the freeway on Clark Avenue and turn left.) I attended simply to shoot a few photographs of Brian holding forth, touch base with General Manager John Krska and Olive House owner Jeff Feeley, and be gone.
    ...
John Krska, Casa Cassara General Manager and Farmer, then took a moment to talk about his sense of the vineyard and how it has evolved, as well as filling us in on the Babcock tradition involved with Casa Cassara.
    ...
I was chatting with Cathy Krska as John was off talking to some other winery folks ... Cathy wanted my daughter to come to her daughter's birthday party on Saturday up at the ranch so we I didn't notice when the desert arrived, although somewhere in the back of my mind I did notice new activity at all the tables and Brian was once again standing back by the wine bar waiting for everyone's attention.

While we didn't have as many tasters as Chef Rick with a line stretching across the entire Firestone Meadow, there was a never ending group poised around our tent talking with Alicia, John, Dan, Carolyn, Danielle and a mixed bag of other Casa Cassara pouring volunteers.

Alicia had done a spectacular job of presentation (at least five star) with bottles of all the latest vintages that will be released in the next few months plus samples of all the older wines that are still available. There was significant interest in the remaining bottles of Burning Creek as well as our Syrah.

At about 2:30, John Krska, our vineyard farmer and winemaker was interviewed by Gabe Saglie of KEYT.
    ...
Gabe asked John about his transition from winemaker at Babcock to winemaker at Casa Cassara, his transition from working among the vines to managing one of the biggest and most successful vineyard farming services in the valley, and his ability to master so many different areas of grape growing and winemaking.
    ...
John pointed out that most of the best wines in the valley are now created by people who work both in the fields and in the winery because it takes a mastery of both of these areas to produce truly great flavors with depth and breadth.

And as always the pouring was being handled by family and friends: Carolyn, Dan, John, Alicia (for a few minutes), Bennie and Bridget.

Due to the changes made in the vineyard and the small amount of rainfall the 1998 harvest was disappointingly small. The grapes were not sold; instead John Krska produced the wine in the shop right on the property.During all phases from picking, crushing and de-stemming, pressing, fermenting and finally bottling the entire family was involved.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was a very pleasant visit by DeWayne Holmdahl who was interviewing for his Wine Show "From the Growing of Grape to the Glass" [Saturdays, 11:00AM-12:00 Noon, KSMA 1240] with John Krska, General Manager and Master Winermaker at Casa Cassara.
    ...
John is always willing to share his vast experience as a vineyard farmer discussing everything from starting new vineyards to the kind of hand care his vineyard stewardship entails. He also has a vast knowledge of the evolution of the grapes in the valley, having farmed many, many of the vineyards both for other wineries and for several of the vintages of the Casa Cassara label.
