To Bob Kroupa, director of Campus Planning, another big incentive to stick with the program is the Monday weigh-ins."I think that's probably the most important thing when you have a successful program," he explained."If you know that every Monday morning, you have to go stand on the scale, it's always in the back of your mind as you're eating every meal throughout the week.Monday's going to be around the corner, better be careful."

Kroupa has been working towards getting his health on track since a "once a century" doctor visit two months prior to the start of the competition which left him with a bad cholesterol report due to a diet which consisted of red meat and more red meat.Kroupa made changes that helped him drop his cholesterol level from 220 down to about 160.He decided to continue his healthy lifestyle by joining the "Biggest Loser," where he has participated on a different team.

When the all-new Alliance Community Hospital opens its doors in a couple of weeks, the staff wants customers to feel more like guests than patients, said Bob Kroupa, the hospital's director of campus planning.

Kroupa has been heading the effort to replace the aging, 102-bed community hospital with a new, state-of-the-art facility.

The $75 million construction project that started in 2004 ends this month, when the new Alliance Community Hospital and an attached nursing home open for business.

"It's got more of a hotel look than a hospital look," Kroupa said.
    ...
"We did a practice run with a hospital bed," Kroupa said.
    ...
"One-third of the hospital is so old, we couldn't put patients in it," Kroupa said.
    ...
Alliance Community Hospital held numerous focus groups with staff and community members to help with the new building's design, Kroupa said.

The walls are painted in various beige tones instead of white.Several ceiling lights have pictures of clouds and pastures to distract patients during tests, such as ultrasounds and CTs.And the waiting area in the new Women's Imaging Center features a fireplace.

    "It's a built-in distraction," Kroupa said.
    ...
"That way, when you leave here, you have all the confidence you have the skills you need," Kroupa said."It's real-life activities."

Eventually, the old hospital will be demolished and the area converted to green space that could be used for future hospital wings.

"We're already set up for expansion," Kroupa said.

Bob Kroupa , executive manager at Alliance Community Hospital , was the lone speaker during the public hearing.Kroupa told council the hospital administrators were seeking the roadway vacation and a companion ordinance that replats the hospital varied properties in order to clarify the paperwork. The second ordinance replats all the hospital owned land in the area bordered by East State , East College , South Union and South Arch into two large lots.Turning the numerous lots and vacated roadways into two large tracts will ease the paperwork when the hospital moves forward with its plan to develop a hospital campus on the land the hospital purchased outright or had the city seize through eminent domain. When the hospital's plan originally was proposed , it contained a third ordinance that sought to have the city vacate Rice Street from Arch Avenue to a point 750 feet west of the intersection. The hospital officials later withdrew that legislation from Planning Commission consideration and Monday night council defeated it to get it off the list of pending legislation.Kroupa said the ordinance was withdrawn because the hospital does not need the street vacation for its immediate plans. He said it could be a decade before the hospital would need to approach the city about assuming control of Rice Street.
