Jim Kronstad is a Professor in the Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of B.C., with additional appointments in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.Dr. Kronstad has been working on fungal pathogenesis since 1984 in both the private sector and academia. He was recognized in 1999 with a Burroughs Wellcome Fund Scholar Award in Molecular Pathogenic Mycology.

Dr. Kronstad obtained his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Washington, Seattle in 1984 and worked as a postdoctoral scientist at ZymoGenetics, Inc. (a biotechnology company founded by Dr. Michael Smith). After additional postdoctoral work at the University of Wisconsin, he joined the faculty at UBC in 1989 and established an NSERC-funded program group to examine mechanisms of virulence in fungal pathogens of cereal crops. In 1995, he expanded his program to examine virulence mechanisms in a related pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans, the leading cause of fungal meningitis in immunocompromised people.Dr. Kronstad's program has focused on the role of signal transduction pathways in pathogen recognition of the host environment and, more recently, on the development of genomic approaches to examine virulence.

The research could eventually lead to better anti-fungal drugs, vaccines for fungal meningitis and faster diagnostic tests, said UBC microbiologist Jim Kronstad, the lead researcher on the project.Kronstad said 10 to 30 per cent of AIDS patients contract a fungal infection, about 45 million cases around the world.

University of B.C. scientist Jim Kronstad is quick to caution cryptococcus is far less virulent than the flu.

But it has already killed several people, and prior to 1999 this strain was not commonly known outside Australia.

So scientists hope to learn ways to penetrate the fungi's tough defence mechanisms.

That's why Kronstad's team is working to crack the genetic code of the mutated form of the fungus.

"I think it's really important in identifying what makes the strains on Vancouver Island particularly aggressive," Kronstad said.

"This fundamental information will help develop better diagnostic tools, as well as antifungal drugs and potential vaccines," says Prof. Jim Kronstad of the Michael Smith Laboratories at UBC."The genome mapping expertise found here in Vancouver has allowed us to take a big step forward in understanding these infections.

Kronstad, a microbiologist, initiated the mapping portion of the study in collaboration with scientists at the BC Cancer Agency's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre, and co-ordinated efforts with the international team, including scientists from The Institute of Genomic Research, Stanford University and Duke University in the U.S.
