On an unusually turbulent flight to London from Los Angeles last year, Todd Michael Krim, who is 30, saw his life flash before his eyes and realized he hadn't properly said "I love you" to his family and friends.

So in September, he launched FinalThoughts.com, Inc., and since then about 5,000 people have signed up for the free service.FinalThoughts members store private messages to loved ones on the Web site and designate a special "Guardian Angel" to push the "send" button after they've died.

Then, last wishes and unexpressed sentiments travel via e-mail to their destinations. Also on the Web site: information on estate and funeral planning and organ donation."We're basically going to be the one-stop shop for all end-of-life issues," says Mr. Krim.FinalThoughts.com recently received about $500,000 in seed capital and plans to generate revenue through advertisements, sponsorships and referrals.

But Mr. Krim is an exception.

President Todd Michael Krim got this idea for online end of life planning utilities during a frightfully turbulent plane ride. This site is great for all those boomer control freaks who can not stand the idea that death means the end of micromanaging their and everyone else's lives. You can even have email sent to loved ones after you bite the big one.Which is an excellent way to bug the crap out of your enemies into infinity and beyond. The Eyeball already ordered it to email each morning an appropriate obscenity to his managing editor in the event that fate robs him of the daily joy of doing it himself. =========================Advert @d : tech.SanFrancisco - May 8-10, San Francisco Hilton & Towers The World's Leading Conference on Internet Advertising, Marketing and eCommerce Stay ahead of your Internet marketing competition, connect with more than 4, 000 marketing and media executives, and find news, research and industry announcements vital to your strategic business decisions.Register by April 21 and SAVE $ 200! FinalThoughts - Press - New York Times - [Cached Version]
Published on: 9/11/2000    Last Visited: 9/11/2000

The site was created by Todd Michael Krim, a 30-year-old lawyer from Los Angeles.

He conceived of the idea on a particularly turbulent transatlantic flight to London last year.As the plane shook violently, he realized that he have not properly said goodbye to his loved ones.

Todd Michael Krim startedFinalThoughts.com as a one-stopsource on death and dying
    ...
While the afterlife e-mails, as they be called, became the basis for creating the site, Mr. Krim envisioned FinalThoughts as a free, one-stop source where people interested in death and dying could find all kinds of information, like descriptions of estate and funeral planning and online discussions about spirituality.

With help from his three brothers and $ 500, 000 in seed money, Mr. Krim began operating FinalThoughts last September (www.finalthoughts.com).It makes money from banner advertisements and commissions on purchases made by visitors who click on links like Barnesandnoble.com.

i be on a mission to bring awareness to this issue and encourage advanced planning, Mr. Krim, who has quit his legal job, said in an interview.I want people to recognize this is something they should be doing for their family. The practical side is to ease the financial and emotional burdens by making these decisions in advance..

Even with the site's many other features, Mr. Krim is asked most often about the afterlife e-mail.Each user chooses a guardian angel who will notify FinalThoughts after the user has died. The site notifies intended recipients via e-mail that a message from the person who has died is waiting to be read.To ensure that Uncle Joe or Aunt Mary do not keel over in shock after receiving a message that appears to have come from the great beyond, each recipient must click on a hyperlink to view the message. So far, none of the afterlife e-mail messages have been activated because no one who has signed up for the service has died yet.

    ...
Mr. Krim emphasized that none of the documents or forms were legally binding and could not serve to invalidate a will. They can function as organizational tools and give survivors a clear picture of those things not mentioned in a will, like a particular song to be played at a funeral or memorial service.

Many of the approximately 10, 000 customers who have signed up for the free afterlife e-mail are under 40, Mr. Krim said.He reasons that people that age are not only more familiar with the Internet but also view talking about death as less taboo than their parents and grandparents.

Mr. Krim blanches at being referred to as a cyberspace funeral director, as he has been in several published articles.

FinalThoughts is not morbid at all, he said.In many ways the site is life-affirming.We communicate that death is a natural human experience..

Licensing Referrals & Kickback Legal Opinion - [Cached Version]
Published on: 11/4/2001    Last Visited: 8/2/2002

Todd Krim, an attorney with the firm of Konowiecki & Rank, counsel for PacifiCare of California, however, took issue with these conclusions. In a letter addressed to the Attorney General, he contended that audiological services are not required to be covered by health maintenance plans under the Knox Keene Act.

But whether or not a plan is required by statute to provide these services is beside the point. The issue is whether the plan does in fact agree to provide these services to its enrollees. If it does, then the plan has a legal obligation to its enrollees to furnish these services. And if another party assumes this obligation, then the health care service plan has received "legal consideration" or a corresponding benefit.

Moreover, the Department of Corporations indicated, parties to such arrangements would not appear to be shielded by the Knox-Keene Act.
