Special Recognition - Eric Kraus, Metroparks intern

The Oak Tree Awards presentation is one of several Metroparks programs being held this week in observance of the 30th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22.The observance began Sunday with the annual Earth Day Family Fest and continues with daily nature walks through the week.The national celebration of Earth Day will be held Saturday in Washington, DC, and in 167 countries around the world.

Eric Kraus

As an intern for the Metroparks, Eric, the youngest of eight Kraus children and 57 Kraus-Anderson grandchildren, put his talents to use at his family farm.The Anderson property is a gift from the family to the citizens of Lucas County and will one day become part of the Metroparks.Working with Metroparks naturalists, Eric spent hundreds of hours restoring a wetland prairie, growing flowering plants of local genotype, planting indigenous trees and building and erecting boxes for a variety of cavity-nesting birds.

Eric is a graduate (Summa Cum Laude) of St. John's University in Minnesota, where he received a BA degree in biology, and St. John's Jesuit High School in Toledo.He has studied in Costa Rica and New Zealand and traveled extensively in East and South Africa prior to beginning his project for Metroparks.He currently works with two horticulture-related businesses : Portage Valley Plant Co. and The Andersons General Store outdoor nursery.
