"Given the similar diagnostic accuracy between the two techniques, logistical issues and local expertise should be more important for determining which to use in the ED," said Dr. Michael C. Kontos, an assistant professor of cardiology at VCU's Medical College of Virginia.

The similar sensitivities give imagers leeway to make the most of each modality's advantages, Kontos said.Echocardiography, for instance, can provide structural and functional data, such as valvular abnormalities, that can have important prognostic information and can indirectly identify other causes for chest pain, such as pericarditis and pulmonary embolism. It is also preferable for patients in whom information is needed immediately. But echo has limits.

Michael C. Kontos, MD, lead investigator and assistant professor of cardiology and emergency medicine at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals of Virginia Commonwealth University, presented research that underscored the effectiveness of Cardiolite imaging in the ER to direct only those patients to angiography who truly require it.In this study of more than 1, 000 patients, fewer patients underwent this invasive procedure when Cardiolite testing was used. This suggests that accurate early risk stratification with Cardiolite can help ER doctors determine the appropriate treatment for patients which often reduces the unnecessary use of expensive and invasive procedures.

Dr. Kontos also presented results of a study conducted at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals of Virginia Commonwealth University to examine a comprehensive ER protocol for evaluating chest pain. Some 600 chest pain patients at low risk for a heart attack were evaluated using Cardiolite imaging to measure blood flow to the heart muscle, allowing doctors to determine the extent of heart damage without more costly invasive testing.

Cardiolite is a myocardial perfusion agent that is indicated for detecting coronary artery disease by localizing myocardial ischemia (reversible defects) and infarction (non-reversible defects) in evaluating myocardial function and developing information for use in patient management decisions.Exercise and pharmacologic stress testing should be performed only under the supervision of a qualified physician.Cardiolite has been rarely associated with acute severe allergic events of angioedema and uticaria. The most frequently reported adverse events include headache, chest pain/angina, ST segment changes on ECG, nausea, and abnormal taste and smell.
