Bob Kobistek forwarded your question along with his reply to me so that I could contribute my technical "two cents worth".
I am an MRI Technologist with 11 years experience on several different types of MRI equipment. In my opinion, there are three very key components the are required for a quality MRI examination: 1.The MRI equipment, about which Bob has already replied, 2.The MRI Technologist, and 3.The interpreting Radiologist.
...
As Bob mentioned, about the only disadvantage would be the closed-bore design which would be as issue if your son is claustrophobic.
Your son's physician might be able to recommend locations for his follow-up scans.
