Susan Knox and her husband raised two children in a 780-

square-foot one-bedroom on the Upper West Side.Knox and her husband slept in the living room.Her son, now 21,

and her daughter, now 23, shared the bedroom - all through their teen years."When my daughter got into her

teens, we divided that small room by bookshelves, so she had at least some privacy," Knox says.

"I certainly would have moved to a larger apartment if we could have afforded it," says Knox, who is a

controller at Lincoln Center.
