    "They all seem to want to know how I do it," she says about women.Her answer would be hard work, staying busy and an unyielding demand for excellence.Knox told Acadiana Woman magazine in 1995 that she "always wanted to be in the oil business.I had a fascination with oil, an ambition."

    After finishing high school and business school in Shreveport, she joined the Texas Co. as a secretary in the gas department and was the youngest of four women in the company among 200 men.

    Her acceptance extended all the way to the Smithsonian, where details of her career and her advice to women in the oil industry are recorded on a video.Knox's many other contributions to the industry and the community include being a co-founder of the Lafayette Oil Directory, an organizer of the Petroleum Club, "even though I was a lady and couldn't get in it until at night," she says.She also played a key role in the establishment and governing of the Municipal Auditorium, now the Heymann Center, and worked with Maurice Heymann on the development of the Oil Center.

    Knox has been described as "one of the greatest authorities and couturiers of Mardi Gras kings' and queens' costumes in the United States" by the Washington Mardi Gras Society, of which she was responsible for the society's ball costumes.She has also served as pageant director for the Krewe of Troubadours in Lafayette since its inception in 1953 and serves as entertainment chairman for the Louisiana Gulf Coast Oil Exposition.

    Knox is the only founder of LAGCOE who is still active and continues to serve on the board as a member of the executive committee.Garber was chairman of LAGCOE 2001 when Knox was elected LOOEY and says, "Not only has she worked hard in the industry, but she's promoted our organization to anyone who would listen."
