Jim Knowles (M.B.A.)
Jim Knowles has been a practitioner in financial and economic analysis for more than 25 years, as a researcher and policy analyst in both the private and public sectors, and as a consultant to pension sponsors and investment managers.
He received a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1977 and a Masters degree in Business Administration, specializing in finance and economics, in 1979.From 1979 to 1981, Jim worked at Financial Models Company, where he created specifications and helped to develop the PERSYS performance measurement system and duration models for bond pricing.
In 1981, Jim joined the Ontario Ministry of Energy, where he was responsible for developing energy price and consumption forecasts, and various energy demand studies.Successive promotions lead to assignments in energy policy analysis and development, a senior position on a team responsible for energy regulatory proceedings, and key roles in the disposition of Ontario's Suncor investment and developing draft legislation relating to natural gas utilities.In 1986, Jim was appointed to lead the Ministry's Electricity Policy branch to manage the activities relating to electricity and nuclear generation, and pricing.
In 1988, Jim and William Waters founded Portfolio Analytics Limited (PAL).

During Jim's 10-year tenure as PAL's senior executive, the company grew to become Canada's largest supplier of mutual and pooled fund information to the investment industry.PAL also developed an investment consulting practice servicing Canadian pension sponsors and fund managers.PAL developed SYLVAN, a multi-period, multi-currency performance attribution system, which was supported by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan Board and expanded PAL's investment consulting to the U.S., the U.K., the Netherlands and Australia.Following PAL's purchase by Morningstar Inc. in late 1999, Jim was a senior team member to help transition the company to new ownership.Jim then co-founded York Investment Strategies Inc. in 2000.
Jim has consulted on a broad range of investment management issues including:
Manager structure and selection. Investment style and risk measurement. Measurement and analyses for multi-manager, multi-currency portfolios. Customized performance attribution models for complex investment decision-making.At York, Jim focuses primarily on developing quantitative investment analysis models and new investment products, and also provides client support services.He is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars, and has written articles on investment performance analysis for the Canadian Investment Review, The Handbook of Equity Style Management and the Journal of Performance Measurement.He is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Performance Measurement.
