Harold L. Knowles
Harold L. Knowles, professor emeritus at the University of Florida, died Sunday in Gainesville.He was 95.
The Chicago native moved to Kansas to complete his graduate work at the University of Kansas.He moved to Gainesville in 1931 when he accepted a teaching position in the department of physics at the University of Florida.In 1954, he was named chairman of the department of physical sciences.
During World War II, he was the director of the Sferics Direction Finder program in the Engineering and Industrial Experiment Station.He was a charter member of the local chapters of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.He also was a member of the Southeastern Section of the American Physical Society.He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy White Knowles.
