  WHITTIER - Ted Knoll, the executive director of an agency helping the homeless, still remembers the man he couldn't help keep his family together.
  
  He had come to the Whittier Area First Day Coalition's shelter.His wife, for whom he had been a caregiver, had died and he became depressed.
  
  But he had children, and the family had no place to live.
  
  "There were very few (shelters) with children at the time," Knoll said.

  "These will be people who have become stabilized, but don't have enough money to transition into their own apartment or house," Knoll said.

  The coalition has mailed letters out and only gotten one response - a person who was interested in the program for a relative, Knoll said.
  
  No one showed up to a Saturday morning meeting.
  
  Another meeting with neighbors is scheduled for 1 p.m. today at the Whittier Historic Depot, 7333 Greenleaf Ave.
  
  Knoll said the coalition plans to spruce up the house and begin a Neighborhood Watch program.
  
  "We want to make it look good and make a nice impression on the community," he said.
