Grad school applications swell as economy swoo - [Cached Version]
Published on: 8/6/2002    Last Visited: 8/6/2002

Nancy Knight, a recruiter for ISU's engineering college, said that, while applications and admission offers are way up, the numbers won't be final until the fall semester starts at the end of August.

Knight said the increase is "a little bit mystifying" and she isn't exactly sure what caused it.

"I think information technology and other strong areas are real in-demand positions, even with the economy," she said.

She said there are a few people returning to school who were working full-time jobs. They either were laid off or decided they needed more job security.

No one is sure exactly how the state budget cuts will affect graduate enrollment. The university cut 27 graduate assistantships starting in the fall to make up for a roughly $32 million cut from the state.

Assistantships offer students paid teaching jobs and a break on their tuition bills.
    ...
Students pay half the cost of in-state tuition and can get paid up to $1,450 a month for teaching in departments such as electrical or computer engineering, Knight said.
