Andrea Kline, Western Michigan University student, received the sentence on Monday.

She pleaded guilty in June to a charge of criminally negligent homicide in the death of her son in February 2007.She originally was charged with second-degree murder.

The now-22-year-old Kline was visiting her boyfriend, a soldier at Fort Drum, when she gave birth to a boy, whose body was found in a trash can at the hotel.

An autopsy revealed the child died of blunt force trauma that caused a skull fracture.Kline's lawyer says the baby died accidentally when Kline tried pull the newborn out of her birth canal.

Andrea Kline of Flint, Mich., was first arrested Monday on a charge of unlawful disposition of a body, a misdemeanor, after the baby's body was discovered at the Best Western Carriage House Inn.

On Wednesday, authorities upgraded the charge against Kline to second-degree murder after an autopsy showed the infant died from blunt force trauma to the head.

Kline, a third-year student at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, was arraigned and ordered held in the Jefferson County jail without bail.Authorities said Kline was in Watertown visiting her boyfriend, who is stationed at nearby Fort Drum.
