    "It's such a hit-and-miss hatch," said Barry Kirkpatrick of Cutthroat Anglers in Silverthorne."The shucks are on the rocks and in the bushes, but this has been one of those years it has been influenced by runoff."

    Kirkpatrick said fishing with stonefly nymphs and dry adult imitations has been good at times upstream from Parshall and in Byers Canyon, but he wonders how long the supersized insects can hold an individual trout's attention.

    "After eating midges all winter, all they have to do is eat two of those guys and they're done feeding," he said.

    SILVERTHORNE - As an owner of Cutthroat Anglers in Silverthorne, Barry Kirkpatrick relies on the Blue River's prestigious Gold Medal status to help keep his shop afloat.

    "It dramatically affects our business," Kirkpatrick said.

    Kirkpatrick has also taken on a proactive role in trying to make the river more attractive to anglers by working with the town to buy additional fish.

    Although Kirkpatrick says the Gold Medal label is crucial, what's more important for his business is how accomplished anglers feel at the end of the day.
