Congratulations to Betty Kirchner who was recently named the City of Topeka's Employee of the Month for March 2002.
Kirchner began her career with the City in March 1970 as Assistant Community Center Director in the City's Parks & Recreation Department.Over the years she has served in the all of the Community Centers, touching the lives of thousands of citizens in a variety of programs, camps, and special events.She currently serves as Supervisor of Community Centers and Camps, overseeing roughly 150 full and part-time employees.
Kirchner was directly responsible for the design and set up of the New Directions Learning Academy.Operating out of the Oakland Community Center, this program is designed to counsel, teach and guide young adults in obtaining their high school diplomas when their class has graduated without them.She also established the Oakland Community Center fitness room, a weight and fitness training and maintenance center.
In addition, Kirchner reactivated the Oakland Community Project Activity Board, which is comprised of community leaders and businesspersons who help fund and organize special events and projects for the growth of the community.
Recently Kirchner spearheaded the Oakland Center holiday food drive, the adoption of an Oakland family for the holiday season, and established a fire relief fund for a local citizen when her home burned down.
Her co-workers state, "Betty is able to communicate her ideas to others, to energize a group of people, and she stands behind her staff and co-workers wholeheartedly.Betty is always searching for new ideas and programs to meet the community needs."
