Mr Kino (the former shirt-seller) denies the claims.

"My artists are like my children.If we have publicity they are the ones who benefit," he said.

Yesterday Mr Kino harvested more talent for Metro 5, signing up award finalists Daniel Truscott (who won the $10,000 People's Choice award) and Emma Langridge (special commendation).

Metro 5 director Brian Kino said he had received threats to staff and threats to throw rocks through the window.

Mr Kino said the painting, which has been sold for $13,500, would remain in the gallery window until Laity's exhibition Underneath ends on Sunday.
