The city of Stayton is negotiating a contract with Fernwood Environmental Services to water trees still surviving in an area of Riverfront Park that faced significant and sudden die-offs recently, according to Interim Public Works Manager David Kinney.
Fernwood Environmental, an environmental-consulting firm based in Salem that specializes in wetland-protection projects, would water the remaining trees and shrubs for the rest of the summer.
In the fall, the city will replant the area with new starts to replace the vegetation that has died, Kinney said.
"Making sure the vegetation survives was part of the original purpose of restoring the riparian area," he said.
