    The FMC would honor legislation that is passed by Congress and signed by the president, said Peter King, the commission's acting general counsel.

    Local fees, however, have caught the attention of the FMC.The commission has asked the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to provide information on their clean-trucks plans, including the user fees.The commission is studying the proposals to determine if the fees would have an unreasonable impact on transportation services, competition and rates.

    King said the FMC does not have direct authority to declare local fees illegal.

     Federal Maritime Commission Appoints Peter J. King Director of Administration

    The Federal Maritime Commission has appointed Peter J. King as Director of Administration, and a member of its Senior Executive Service. Mr. King, who has been with the FMC since 1987, officially became director April 15, 2007. As director he will oversee the FMC's Office of Financial Management, Office of Human Resources, Office of Information Technology, and Office of Management Services.

    Mr. King first joined the Commission as a Trial Attorney in the Bureau of Enforcement (BOE). Since then he has served as Deputy Director in the BOE and also with the Commission's Bureau of Certification and Licensing. Before coming to the FMC he was an associate attorney with the law firm of Hoppel Mayer & Coleman in Washington D.C., specializing in transportation, vessel financing and customs law. Mr. King is a graduate of the Catholic University of America and the National Law Center, George Washington University. He has also served as an elected Councilman to the City of College Park, Maryland, a member of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, and served as a voting member of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board.

    The Federal Maritime Commission announced the selection of Peter J. King as its Director of Administration, effective April 15, 2007.This appointment also designates Mr. King as a member of the Senior Executive Service.

    Most recently, Mr. King served as the Acting Director in the agency's Office of Administration.Mr. King joined the Commission in 1987 as a Trial Attorney in the Commission's Bureau of Enforcement, and later became that Bureau's Deputy Director; from 2004-2006, he served as Deputy Director of the Commission's Bureau of Certification and Licensing.He began his career as an associate attorney with the law firm of Hoppel Mayer & Coleman in Washington D.C. , practicing in the areas of transportation, vessel financing and customs law.

    Mr. King is a lifelong resident of Maryland; he is a graduate of the Catholic University of America (B.A. Sociology, 1975) and the National Law Center , George Washington University (Juris Doctor, 1978).From 1991-2003, Mr. King concurrently served as an elected Councilman to the City of College Park, Maryland.He is a past member of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and a past voting member of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board.He continues to reside in College Park with his wife Mary and their six children.

    In appointing Mr. King, the Commission recognizes the experience and dedication he brings to the position of Director of Administration, and the Senior Executive Service.
