Peter King (R-NY), who has spent most of his political career fluffing US public opinion for Sinn Fein-IRA, has now come out and said the Americans are finding it "hard to see what the justification is for the continued existence of the IRA."
Maybe it's just me, but I find his declaration a little bittersweet. He's right - it is hard to see what justification there is.

Some background: Peter King's got a reputation for being tough on terror. He gets a good write-up here for calling for tough measures on internal Islamist terrorists in the US.He gets another good write-up here, where he's also acknowledged as a member of AIPAC.Now, all credit to him on this - I'm as pro-Israel and anti-Islamist as the next warmongering nationalist - but I sense a bit of inconsistency here.
Now, I am sure, Rep.Peter King would argue that there was a just cause here, and that's why the IRA had to be supported. He could cite this sort of drivel in support (anything that says "see the film Brave Heart for an insight" is in trouble). He might even seek to deny that the IRA is a bunch of evil murdering terrorist bastards.I hope, though, that he's a man of some intelligence, and would try to explain some remotely plausible reasons why.
My guess is that his main argument would be that in the late 1960s, there were significant civil rights issues relating to discrimination against Catholics in Northern Ireland under Stormont.

King would find the antics of the Black Panthers legitimate. As an AIPAC man, I doubt too that he would endorse Hamas, although at least they can claim to be operating in a normal military situation (Israel is an occupuing foreign power within the territories).

King to the side of peace and democracy.
