Jane graduated from Birmingham University in 1979 with a joint honours degree in Economics and Political Science.
Following a gap year, she went on to join one of the "Big eight" (now big four) firms of accountants in Birmingham and completed her ACA exams and experience during the recession of the 1980s, when major layoffs were often timed to coincide with audit visits.
She then went for a change of field and country, moving to Papua New Guinea to work for Coopers as a tax manager.
Following her return to the UK, the move to education came after a spell of teaching accountancy to the unemployed.

Jane is interested in all aspects of taxation and taxation research, in particular the history of taxation, which helps to explain many of the vagaries existing in our current tax legislation.
She has been involved with the development of the ACCA/Brookes degree in Applied Accounting and was also a marker for several years for the accountancy professional qualification when the innovative case study paper was introduced.
