Andre King, Loganville Christian Academy athletic director and head football coach, begins his second season at the helm and recently said his troops have been diligently preparing for the upcoming campaign.

"We took a week off after spring practice," said King, "but ever since then the guys have been working hard on their off-season lifting and conditioning programs."

King said the Lions are in the weight room four days a week and are on the field doing football-specific drills once a week.

"The kids have been working extremely hard, preparing the bodies for the upcoming season," King said.

The head Lion said his staff made a decision to forego outside camps in favor of teaching the players his plays and the LCA way of doing things.

"We believe we are better off working with our own players this way," King said.

"I told the kids that I'm going to treat you like you just fell down from Mars and landed at LCA," said first-year Lions head football coach Andre King."I'm having to teach most of them all over again."

For someone as knowledgeable about the game as King, starting virtually from scratch has been a real challenge.

"I talk real slow in our team meetings," said King, who played for the University of Miami and spent four seasons with the Cleveland Browns.
    ...
King has two more practice games scheduled before the season kicks off on Aug. 29.

LCA will travel to Dawson Street Christian of LaGrange on Aug. 15 and host Pinecrest Academy of Cumming on Aug. 23.

For now, the players are working out regularly in a barn that's been converted into a weight room.

"A parent is letting us keep our weights there until we get our own place," King said.

They are participating in several passing leagues, which pit the seven offensive skill-position players against seven defenders.

"The leagues provide on-the-job training," King said."We get to run our plays against another team trying to stop them.It teaches our guys to get the play in the huddle, read coverages, make adjustments.

    "It's a no-pressure situation that's been priceless for us."

King said he's been pleased with how well and quickly the players are adjusting to the new game. But he has no illusions about the task ahead of him.

After beginning its football program as a member of the Independent Christian Schools of Georgia and Alabama, the Lions are joining the Georgia Independent School Association.

"The GISA is a very talented and difficult league," King said.

"The second time you play an opponent you never know what you're gong to get," said LCA head coach Andre King.
    ...
King said the Players of the Game were Monda on offense, Clay Mote on defense and the entire offensive line for an outstanding effort in the win.

"I thought the kids came out and played well - especially amidst all the distractions of homecoming week activities," said Lions head coach Andre King.

King complimented the Knights from Barrow County for being the most physical team LCA had faced.
    ...
"We made some adjustments at halftime and we were able to take advantage of some mis-matches in their secondary," King said. "I told our defense not to give up the big play and we made them earn every yard."

Now the Lions are getting ready for King's Ridge, a team that has already played some common opponents. King said his next opponent is a very well-coached team and, while they are not as big and physical as Barrow, they will present their own set of challenges.

"Their quarterback is probably their best player and he is very effective at getting the ball to a triplicate of wide-outs," King said.

Second-year Loganville Christian Academy athletic director Andre King may have had that sentiment in mind when he announced the LCA football team will play a junior varsity school schedule in the 2009 season.

The Lions, with an 0-10 record in Georgia Independent Schools Association play last year, made the move prompted by what King said are concerns over safety of his players.

"We were playing against much larger schools and our size and the relative inexperience of our players made the safety of our boys a major issue," said King.

Frequently, the LCA sideline at last year's games seemed to have as many players on crutches as not.

The Lions opened spring football practice last Monday and will culminate 10 days of practice with a spring game, hosting Arlington Christian Academy May 21 on the LCA campus.

The Lions lost a number of key players to graduation but King says his backfield is returning, almost completely intact.

"Dylan Adcock, Cody Eberhardt and Matt Kirkland will be the core of our team," King said.

Hunter Cook, Braden Berry and Brett Gealey are returning players on whom King is counting to make significant contributions.
    ...
King said a decision on moving up to a varsity schedule will be made year-to-year based on the growth of LCA and the preparedness of the Lions to play at the next level.

"If a kid is trying to decide if LCA is where he wants to play football, the first thing he and his family, should think about is that he will have a long life after football is over," said King. "This school will help prepare him for that life. Just look at the athletic and scholastic scholarships our graduates have been awarded and I think you'll find we stack up against almost anyone," said King.

"This year, we will be playing against schools who are in similar situations to us - new, start-up programs or schools who have had to scale back their own programs for a variety of reasons," King said.

King said the strength of his 2009 team resides in the backfield and in the receiving corps.

"Matt Kirkland started the majority of games at quarterback last year and he has the experience to lead our offense," King said.
    ...
It forces you to be much more efficient in play-calling and getting rid of the ball," King said.

Andre King, Loganville Christian Academy athletic director and head football coach echoes that sentiment.

"The guys are excited about playing football, starting fresh, building on the lessons we learned last year; they are rejuvenated and have a lot of confidence about this season," King said.
    ...
King said the 2009-10 schedule has been completely re-vamped and features other schools that will be playing a junior-varsity schedule.

LCA will also be playing teams in the Christian Sports Athletic Association.

The Lions will be participating in a mini-camp, on campus, Aug. 3, in preparation for a scrimmage game against King's Ridge.

"This is really an exciting time to be an LCA football player," King said.

Andre King, LCA athletic director, said Cohen was hired because Mark Dossett, who led the Lions to their first girl's championship, "has a passion for volleyball and with softball moving from a spring sport with the ICSGA to a fall sport with GISA, he could not coach both sports and so we needed to find a replacement."
    ...
"The school conducted an extensive search for a person who could fill a role on the faculty as well as one who had great softball experience and Amberly brings us the best of both worlds," King said.

Cohen's coaching experience includes four years of co-coaching in a middle school program while she was in college and two years experience at SFCA.
