Mr. Richard Kim & the Busen
Portrait of Richard KimO'Sensei Richard Kim, Ph.D. Hanshi may well be the most knowledgeable man alive in the martial arts field.
He has earned this distinction after decades of work and study with scores of recognized masters throughout the world.
Mr. Kim's martial arts training began at the early age of six, when his mother enrolled him in a judo class in Hawaii. As early as 1926, he had already mastered the rudiments of Judo from Kaneko sensei.Dr. Kim began his training
in 1927.
He spent a great deal of time at local boxing clubs where he acquired his many boxing skills while training with some of the top world contenders of the era, as a sparring partner.
At about the same time, he was gaining a foundation in Karate from Arakaki, Yabu Kentsu's disciple.
In 1933, Sensei Kim , in Honolulu, furthered his knowledge of karate under the direction of Tachibana. Two years later he graduated from high school and was orient-bound to further his study in the field. He eventually found his way to Japan where he studied under some of the great karate masters of the time including the legendary Yabu Kentsu .
Moving on to China, he continued his studies of Tai Chi Chuan under the tutelage of Chen Chin Wuan and also Pa Kua under the guiding hand of Chao Hsu Lie, another famous Chinese master of the internal system.
After the war, Sensei Kim continued to shuttle back and forth between the U.S. and Japan to further his study of the martial arts.It was not until 1959 that he made a permanent residence of San Francisco, California.
During the interim he studied with many martial arts notables such as Gogen Yamaguchi, and impressed Hirose Kinjo as being a "walking karate encyclopedia".
One of the greatest masters Sensei Kim studied under is the renowned Yoshida Kotaro, who he says taught him an insurmountable amount.
Sensei Kim has been given many top honors over the years. Some of the most noteworthy are:
1967 Voted Sensei of the Year from Black Belt magazine 1973 Voted into the Black Belt magazine Hall of Fame Director of the U.S. Team for many I.A.K.F. World Championships around the globe
...
Richard Kim is the head of the Zen Bei Busen in the United States.
For a man with outstanding academic achievements from Saint John's University in Shanghai, China and the University of Hawaii it may seem strange that he devotes his life to the teaching of the martial arts, but his love of them is apparent when he is leading a group in California, Massachusetts, Canada, or in Europe.Understanding becomes self-evident once you meet the man or attend one of his lectures or camps and experience for yourself his excitement and all consuming passion for the martial arts.
Mr. Kim is a distinguished author several times over with classics like The Weaponless Warriors, The Classical Man, The Kobudo Okinawan Weapons Series including the weapons of Matsu Higa, Chatan Yara and Hama Higa, and numerous articles in various noteworthy publications throughout the martial arts world.
It is clear that Sensei Kim embodies the spirit and has mastered being "the artist of life."
