Aspiring musicians will get a chance to see one of Canada's most accomplished pianists when Michael Kim plays at the Port Theatre on Thursday (Jan. 24).
To make the opportunity available to young students, the Nanaimo Conservatory of Music has offered its students complementary tickets to the evening performance.
Kim is a member of Piano Six, a collective of Canadian professional pianists who are dedicated to bringing the experience of fine concert hall to communities across Canada.
In addition to his evening concert, he will give a less formal concert to students at Ecole Pauline Haarer school in the afternoon.At that time, students will have the opportunity to ask questions and speak personally to the artist.
Michael Kim is a native of Calgary, where he began playing piano at age 11.Just four years later he was a soloist with the Calgary Philharmonic playing Rachmaninoff.
He studied at the famous Juilliard School in New York City, where he received the doctorate in music arts.Kim has won over 120 scholarships and awards, and has performed with orchestras across Canada, the U.S., Britain and Asia.
The performance at the Port Theatre will feature Chopin, Beethoven and Liszt.Kim is dedicating this recital to the memory of the thousands of victims of the attack on the World Trade Centre on Sept. 11.
