"Using special techniques, we've been able to extract the signal from the noise," said Michael Kim, president of Enuvis. The problem, he says, is that GPS satellites operate at a power equivalent of one to two Christmas lights and do not produce a strong enough signal after traveling through space. The satellites are further impaired by concrete and metal structures in metropolitan areas. Therefore, the second-generation GPS technology being deployed for E911 is inefficient and sometimes useless in cities.

"In order for GPS to get imbedded in these devices, it has to become cheap," Kim said.

Digital Angel Corp. has developed another use for GPS technology. The company builds location systems to track children, elderly, and the disabled.

"We've gotten a lot of inquiries after Sept. 11," says Amro Albana, president of the company."Parents are concerned about their kids."

The $300 device consists of a watch and pager, and has a fall sensor, proximity setting, alert button, and an ambient temperature sensor tied in with a location service.
