Joowon Kim, a native of South Korea, began her musical education on piano at the age of five.Upon immigration to Canada with her family, she took up the violin, and two years later, at the age of twelve, she started to play the cello.It was not until her junior year in high school, however, that she embarked on her formal cello studies under the tutelage of Vladimir Orloff and David Hetherington at the University of Toronto.
Ms. Kim earned a Bachelor of Music Performance degree at the University of Toronto, Masters Delaureate from Columbus, Georgia under Martha Gerschefski and a Masters of Music at the University of Southern California as a recipient of the Dean's Scholarship.

Joowon Kim has also won many competitions which led her to tour widely in the United States and Canada. While in Los Angeles Ms. Kim was a member of the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra, the Millennial Arts Chamber Orchestra and on the faculty at the Korean American Institute of Fine Arts.
Currently, Ms. Kim is on the faculty of The Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and Co-Director of The IMC's Junior String Academy.Her students are consistant recipients of Gold and Silver medal honours for the RCM Examinations as well as winners of many Local, Provincial and National music competitions.An active freelance musician throughout the Greater Toronto Area, she resides with her family in Pickering, Ontario.
