Julie Kilpatrick, a Customer Service officer at Clydesdale Bank's Mearns Cross branch, has scooped a once in a lifetime chance to be in the shooting circle at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in March 2006.
A member of the women's hockey squad, Julie (age 21 years) has been selected to represent her country at the highest level, much to her delight and that of her family and colleagues.Julie was also chosen to help unveil the 2006 Scottish team kit at a prestigious Farewell Dinner hosted by Clydesdale Bank in Glasgow (25 January) and attended by leading politicians and stars of the track and screen*.
Julie, who is from Giffnock and began playing field hockey at Primary School, said, "The Commonwealth Games is the pinnacle of our sport and it is simply amazing to be able to compete under the Scottish banner. In fact, it is the only time we get to compete in a world class event with other sports so it is a really exciting time for all of us.
"Everyone, especially my family, friends and colleagues, have been so supportive, especially with the amount of training I have to put in and the impact that has on my personal and work life.I really couldn't have got to this level without their backing."
A graduate of Strathclyde University with a degree in Business Law, Julie was recruited by Clydesdale Bank, a major partner of the Commonwealth Games Scotland team, in October 2005.
Based at the Mearns Cross branch, Julie is the first point of contact for customers coming into the branch to carry out transactions or who phone the branch. As well as working full time, she takes part in nine hockey session per week.
Julie continued, "I was a little worried that my colleagues would resent the time off needed to go to competitions such as the recent European Championships which are crucial in terms of selection for events like the Commonwealth Games.I needn't have been worried as they are really interested in what I do and are always keen to hear how I got on.
I know they will be behind me 100% when I get on the pitch in Melbourne, which is a great feeling to have."
Steve Reid, General Manager, Retail at Clydesdale Bank, said, "We are really proud to be able to give Julie our backing, both through her role in the bank and our faith in her success at what will be her first Commonwealth Games event.
