"He didn't know shoes were a part of the deal," said Killough.

Fortunately the student was early and had enough time to change his shoes, he said.

"Being poorly dressed can lead to working a lot harder to convince the employer to hire you," Killough.

He said he advises students to err on the side of conservative, because it is better to be overdressed than under-dressed in a business workplace.

As a Master's graduate of Texas Tech University, Jay has worked in Higher Education for the past 6 years, primarily in the Career Center, but also in Admissions and School Relations.He coordinates the StrengthsQuest program for Texas Tech University and enjoys traveling and presenting StrengthsQuest to various publics outside the University.He has previous experience in the music and manufacturing industries, and has spoken to audiences across Texas regarding career and professional development issues.He has served on the Southwest Association of Colleges and Employers planning committees and was recently elected to their Board as Technology Director.

Jay Killough, an associate director with the Career Center, said since summer has already started, most students have given up hope of landing an internship, which is a bad idea.

"While most internships are structured to start June through August, some internships are ongoing and students can be hired at anytime," he said.

Jay Killough, associate director for the Career Center, said whether a student needs a master's degree depends on the job field

"Some times they want to hire a student who just has a bachelor's degree because they need entry level personnel," he said.
