The nonprofit organization presented 28 grants totaling $1,003,347 to community organizations and area schools, according to Jamie Killorin, chairman of the Board of Directors of The Venice Foundation.
Toledo Blade Elementary School will receive the $30,000 for its "Edgar Says Read, Read, Read" initiative.According to the grant application, this project allows students, families, faculty and staff to achieve greater success in reading comprehension by increasing their reading opportunities.
Besides Toledo Blade, the foundation awarded a total of $309,682 to 11 area schools through its Strategic Grantmaking in Education initiative.
SGE is a process of offering resources to schools so that the implementation of new instructional approaches is complete and that these changes take hold and produce high student achievement, improved graduation rates and a more successful transition to college and/or career placement.

"The Venice Foundation Board has had a strong desire to make a significant impact in the area of providing proper nutrition to residents of all ages in our community," Killorin said."This grant to All Faiths Food Bank should go a long way toward bringing food to those in our area who need it most."
Jewish Family and Children's Service of Sarasota-Manatee Inc. was awarded $122,140 for its "Project PROTECT" program to provide mental health assessments and services to meet the emotional, psychological, and cognitive needs of isolated, frail elderly in South County.
As of June 2002, The Venice Foundation has provided more than $32 million in grants to eligible nonprofit organizations for a variety of activities ranging from arts and cultural activities in the schools to enhanced health-care facilities and services.
