DOHA: The Al Shifa Trust Eye Hospital at Rawalpindi in Pakistan is fully geared to accept foreign patients for treatment, Lieutenant Gen (retired) Jahan Dad Khan, president of the hospital trust, said yesterday.
Khan, who arrived in Doha yesterday as part of his Gulf tour, was speaking to newsmen at Ramada Hotel."The purpose of my visit is to meet with friends of Al Shifa Trust who have been patronising us for many years and to brief them about the progress made since my last visit to the Gulf," said Khan, who also served as Governor of Pakistan's Sindh province from 1983-87.
Khan said the 250-bed eye hospital, which is recognised as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness for Pakistan and Eastern Mediterranean Region, has the latest diagnostic and surgical equipment. He said until recently, the hospital was only treating Pakistani nationals but would now welcome patients from other countries as well.
On an average, 500 to 600 patients are treated daily in the hospital with an average of 60-70 operations every day, he said . The hospital has successfully treated about 3.1 million patients and performed around 250,000 operations.
"Seventy per cent of our patients get complete free treatment while 20 per cent are treated on subsided rates," said Khan.Established in 1985, the Al Shifa Eye Trust, is a non-political and non-profitable organisation.
Khan will address the Pakistani community today (Monday) at 5.30pm at the Pakistan embassy.
