This past summer, Kes had an opportunity to practice with the University of Michigan swimmers, and in particular with Dan Ketchum, '00.Kes wrote to let us know how Dan did in the World University Games.UPDATEGot an e-mailfrom Kes to the team.In it he states he may be leaving Pitt and transferring to Miami University next year.He would still like to swim and has contacted Coach Pete Lindsay from Miami.He will keep us informed.UPDATE8/26/02Kes has transferred to Miami University.Kes has decided not to swim this year and concentrate on his grades.He has his sights on either Medical School or Grad School and feels he needs to get his grades to a higher level if he wants to go that route.He is enjoying Miami, even though he is taking a very difficult course load this semester.UPDATE5/12/03Kes is spending his summer in Lithuania.He has a grant to work in the medical field shadowing doctors.This will be a great experience for Kes, who is still hoping to enter Med School after graduating from Miami.UPDATE9/21/04 -Kes is looking forward to his 21st birthday which is on the 24th of September.(This comes from his brother.)Kes has gone back to swimming and is practicing with the Miami team.He also will take another year at Miami to pick up a major in zoology.If all goes well, he then will apply to Medical schools in the mid-West.UPDATE 9/26/04Saw Kes at church with Algis, Lina and his Mom.He found out he definitely is on the Miami Team.His family was here to celebrate his 21st birthday!UPDATE 7/14/05Along with graduating from Miami, Kes also had to study for the MCAT exam in April.He is now applying to medical schools that are primarily Osteopathic schools.He will be working in Oxford for the winter at Alexander House and working as a lab manager for a visual perception lab at Miami.He is also looking into his options of going on a medical mission trip for a month or so.Some places he is looking at right now are some of the poorer parts of the world, like Central America, Caribbean or Eastern Europe.He also is thinking about doing some running and maybe even join the Masters Swim Team at Miami.UPDATE 1/29/06Kes is waiting to see if he is accepted to medical school.He should know in a couple of months.He is still working in Oxford, helping out with the swim team, and doing some swimming with the Masters team . UPDATE 2/13/06Kes has been accepted to Lake Erie College ofOsteopathic Medicine.He will be starting there August 1.Needless to say, he is very excited about entering this phase of his life, something he was wanted to do since high school.UPDATE 8/30/06 Kes is at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Erie, Pa., AKA Dreary Erie because it rains so much.After 2 1/2 weeks he is into his 3rd exam.In July he was commissioned as an officer in the U. S. Navy.His summers will be learning all about the Navy, and when he graduates from college he will serve in the Navy for 4 years as a physician.This past summer he biked and backpacked for 3 weeks in England and Europe covering France, Italy, Austria and Germany.Upon his return, he coached swimming at Hudson High School and really loved it. Dan Ketchum - Dan is ranked #1 in the country for the 200 Freestyle.He is tied with Klete Keller for this position.Both boys have a 1:34.99 in the event.Dan swam his race at the Big 10 Championships at the University of Minnesota.Dan has also received the award as the Big 10 Freshman of the Year, an award that has been dominated by Michigan Freshman over the past several years.UPDATEDan had a very successful NCAA meet.He finished 7th in both the 200 Free and 500 Free with times of 1:35.96 and 4:20.10, respectively.He also competed in the mile, finishing 13th with a time of 15:04.01.Dan also was on the 800 Free Relay for Michigan which finished 3rd, and he had a lead-off 200 time of 1:34.90.He also was on the 400 Medley Relay.Following that meet, he went to the USA National Championships and swam the 200 Free.On the basis of that swim, he has qualified to the World University Games in the 200 Free and the 800 Free Relay.UPDATE:Dan placed 3rd in the World University Games in the 200 free with a final time of 1:50.59, slightly over his semi-final race of 1:50.33.Dan was also anchor on the 800 free relay that placed second.UPDATE11/14/02Danwritesthat school is going well, but he is finding the type of engineering he is studying this year not to be of real interest to him.Dan has been having some shoulder problems for about 6 months, but it doesn't seem to be affecting his swimming.This past summer he made the Pan Am Games for 2003, and he is excited about that.This fall his times have been ahead of where he normally is at this time of the year, so he is hoping his shoulder holds up for the season.Dan is excited about this team with the freshmen they recruited, and believes that Michigan has a chance to be in the top five.UPDATE7/9/04Dan has become the firstSycamore swimmer to make an Olympic swimming team.He will be a member of the 800 Free Relay by virtue of his swim in the 200 free in which he placed 5th with a time of 1.48.67 - .77/100 faster than his semi-final swim and his personal best.CONGRATULATIONS, DAN, AND GOOD LUCK IN ATHENS!!!UPDATE 8/19/04Dan was a member of the 4x200 Free relay event.He swam in the prelims of the event.The team went on to win the event and by virtue of his participation in the event, Dan also was presented with a Gold Medal.UPDATE 9/17/04Dan was honored prior to the Sycamore-Colerain football game for his participation and gold medal in the 800 free relay at the Olympics.Dan received a glass plaque etched with the Olympic rings and worded "Aves to Athens, 2004 Olympics, Dan Ketchum, 4x200 Free Relay".In turn, Dan presented an Olympic flag to the school that had been signed by members of the Men's Olympic Team.Dan will end his swimming career by competing in the Short Course Meters World Championships in Indianapolis in October.He will swim in the prelim relay event on October 8.UPDATE 10/09/04Dan finished his swimming career by participating in the Short Course Meters World Championships.He swam both the prelim and finals of the 4 x 200 Free Relay.He led off in the prelims and swam the third leg of the relay for finals.The United States team was in a virtual tie with the Australians when Dan enter the pool and he gave them about a second and a half lead, helping the United States to win the event by a mere 7/100ths.Dan now posses a World Championship Gold Medal and an Olympic Gold Medal.UPDATE 1/29/06Dan was inducted into the Sycamore Hall of Fame on January 28.He finished his Master's program and graduated in December.He is in a training program at GE and is working at the Evendale plant for his first rotation which will be for six months.Also, Dan will be married in June to a girl who was on the Michigan swim team.They will be married in Philadelphia.
