Bob Ketchum takes viewers back in Mountain Home history again with his latest DVD release featuring films from the 1950s."From the Archives" is a follow-up to Ketchum's 2006 release of the DVD "This Is Your Town."
"From the Archives" features two films shot by the late Ed Pinkston and Garvin Carroll, two modern Mountain Home pioneers.Ketchum, a Baxter County native and media entrepreneur, has transferred their movies from film to DVD.
Pinkston's portion of the DVD features a 50-minute, 8mm film he shot circa 1957, according to Ketchum.Pinkston, a longtime local educator, died in 1991.While Ketchum said the 8mm isn't quite the same as the 16mm professional film used for "This Is Your Town," "but it's still a great find nevertheless.
"This film is centered more around the residents of Mountain Home," said Ketchum, who produced the DVD at his Cedar Crest Studios in Henderson."It is less about businesses and more about people.Ed takes the camera inside many of the homes and features prominent citizens and their families.
"It is a gold mine for nostalgia buffs as all the furniture, appliances, technology and fashion of the era are prominently displayed on the screen, and in color," he said.
Ketchum said the music soundtrack that accompanies the silent film is his mother at the piano."The music fits the mood of the film perfectly," he said.
Carroll's is a 56-minute, 8mm film from his collection that Ketchum said he gave to him before his death earlier this year.Carroll had been the local Arkansas Power and Light manager for many years and was active in the Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society. His movie is about the Mountain Home First Baptist Church and its congregation.
"It follows many of the functions and activities of the church throughout the year 1959," said Ketchum."The families represented here make the core of Mountain Home's founding fathers. Many of the children seen in Sunday school class in the film are today's movers and shakers in our community."
Copies of "From the Archives" are available at Mountain Home Area Chamber of Commerce, Baxter County Library and from the Historical Society. The price is $15, with $5 of each sale going to the place of sales origin, said Ketchum.
