Prior to last week’s regular-season finale against Calhoun Academy, Thomas Sumter Academy varsity football head coach Troy Kessinger said his team has already been in playoff mode for a few weeks.
    ...
“More than anything else, our enthusiasm was very good,” said Kessinger of Friday’s win.
    ...
The Generals didn’t actually win four straight at any point this year, but Kessinger may have felt good enough about his team’s performance in a 49-28 loss to powerful Heathwood Hall in the middle of three wins that he counted it as a positive experience.

TSA has met the Dolphins in the playoffs each of the last three years, losing in 2006 and 2007 but winning 27-19 last year enroute to the 2A state title game, which it lost 28-10 to Northwood.

Kessinger said he thinks last year’s HHP squad may have been a little better than this year’s edition both in terms of the strength of its running game and the size of its line.

Still, the Generals have been able to move the ball, and Kessinger said he’s looking to play a little ball control against the Dolphins.

“It’s a yearly ritual,” Kessinger said of facing the Dolphins again in the 2A playoffs. “Offense is what they’re good at. They spread it out, and they have some good playmakers, and they just try to spread it out and get their guys in open space. They’re good at that, and they’ve been scoring points on a lot of people.

“We hope that we can move the ball on them,” Kessinger added.

"The Wilson Hall game from last year, it was a couple of physical teams," said TSA head coach Troy Kessinger, whose team is 3-2 on the season. "It was just a great battle.

"This year, we've got two losses (in a row), they've got three (in a row) and both teams are trying to right the ship," he added.
    ...
"This last week, we played the best 2A team in the state," said Kessinger.
    ...
"(Wilson Hall quarterback) Josh Glenn, we have to contain him," said Kessinger.

"I was up here getting a drink, I'm getting the offense ready and all of a sudden they're out there," said TSA head coach Troy Kessinger, whose team improved to 7-4.
    ...
"We're not used to that, and we don't like it," Kessinger said of the Dolphins hurry-up style offense.
    ...
The final TSA score came with Kessinger playing some of his reserves.

Thomas Sumter head coach Troy Kessinger went for two after the score, but Stengel's pass in the end zone fell incomplete.
    ...
While Griggs faced the challenge of trying to keep his team patient on offense, Kessinger faced another problem on the Generals sideline.
    ...
"Sometimes it is hard to convince kids a team you have beaten pretty good the last two years has become a good football team, and after you get a 14-0 lead like that, you start feeling good about yourself and figure it is going to go that way again," Kessinger said.
    ...
"That was the biggest of the big plays," Kessinger said of Murphy's touchdown.
    ...
At first, the Generals had the kicking team out after Stengel's score, but after a Lee timeout, Kessinger decided to go for the win.
    ...
"They (Lee) did a good job on that extra point," Kessinger said.

"Harrison no doubt has the stats to be offensive and defensive players of the week, but he also kicked two field goals in a pressure situation," said TSA head coach Troy Kessinger.

DALZELL - Thomas Sumter Academy varsity football head coach Troy Kessinger wasn't entirely displeased with his team's 17-12 loss to Laurence Manning in last Friday's LMA Jamboree, particularly since it didn't count toward his team's goals.
    ...
We competed," Kessinger said on Wednesday.
    ...
"(King is) big, and they're strong up front for being a 1A school, so we've got to be prepared for that and bow up a little bit on them," Kessinger said.
    ...
Kessinger will be looking for an improved defensive performance. He said Laurence Manning was able to move the ball against his team much too easily.

"Hopefully we've got that shored up and we'll get to the ball a little bit better," he said. "It's a process."

Offensively, Kessinger is excited about his four primary playmakers, quarterback Blake Stengel, fullback Michael Fitzgerald, tight end Ricky Mello and the multi-talented Harrison Cardone.
    ...
"Those four have just got to get touches," Kessinger said.
    ...
Kessinger said he likes his team's attitude heading into the season opener coming off a pair of outstanding seasons, the most recent culminating in an appearance in the SCISA 2A state championship game.

"This week has been by far our sharpest week," he said.

"We ran into a buzzsaw tonight with their defense," said TSA head coach Troy Kessinger, whose team finishes the season with an 11-3 record.
    ...
"That's the way it goes," Kessinger said.
    ...
Kessinger, in his third year as head coach of the Generals, had taken over the program when it had only a couple dozen athletes on the sidelines. He credits the group of seniors on this team with not only helping build themselves into a state-championship contender, but also build the program into a perpetual winner.

"Our seniors need a lot of credit," he said. "They've been with me since I've been here.

"We have to play good football," TSA head coach Troy Kessinger said of taking the next step.
    ...
"We've got to play fast," said Kessinger.
    ...
Kessinger is hoping to butter the Generals' bread with running backs Phillip Frazier and Dustin Scott.
    ...
"Dustin will be more involved this week," said Kessinger.
    ...
While no loss is fun, Kessinger hopes the Heathwood game was a wakeup call of sorts.

"It would be great to go 14-0 and win it all," he said. "Sometimes a couple losses here and there get you focused. You know you aren't quite where you want to be.

"I know we took a butt whipping," Kessinger added.
