Newspapers and New Media - [Cached Version]

This year's debaters were the aforementioned Daniels (the founder of NandO.Net and the former executive editor of the News & Observer in Raleigh, NC, Daniels now has his fingers in many multimedia pies, including the chairmanship of the software development firm KOZ and the chairmanship of the content firm TotalSports) and Paul Kessinger, senior vice president of marketing for the New Century Network, the consortium of newspaper web sites.
    ...
The idea was that Daniels - who in 1995 and 1996 had championed the notion that newspapers needed to do new media on their own - and Kessinger - who represented the biggest newspaper new media affiliation organization - would slug it out.
    ...
Daniels would give all these reasons why newspapers didn't need any help and Kessinger would make the case for papers to join up with NCN.
    ...
I should have known that I wasn't going to achieve the desired effect when Kessinger sent me e-mail saying, "My only worry about this event is whether two people can really fill an hour and a half on what is - at first blush - a pretty uncontroversial topic. We could move on to Marv Albert jokes, I suppose."

Well, we filled the 90 minutes without any toupee or biting references, but it didn't quite end up the way I envisioned.

    ...
Kessinger then went on to illustrate the high-quality aspects of New Century Network and I vainly attempted to stir up some controversy, to no avail.

The in-house net.The next session was called "Intranet-based Solutions."Since I had dreamed up this idea in April, it wasn't likely to provide me with quite as many surprises.
